Substance Use Disorder Counseling
Exam Information
There are four license classifications available in the field of substance-use disorder counseling in Utah. They are: Certified Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (CSUDC), Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (SUDC), Certified Advanced Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (CASUDC), and Advanced Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (ASUDC). Applicants must pass the following exams for their license type before applying.
Certified Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (CSUDC)
CSUDC applicants must pass one of the following exams:
- NCC AP Exam Level I or II administered by the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC);
- NCC AP Master Addiction Counselor Exam (MAC) administered by NAADAC;
- Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) Exam administered by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC); or
- Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (AADC) Exam administered by IC&RC.

Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (SUDC)
Applicants who hold a current CSUDC license in Utah are not required to pass any additional exams before they apply for the SUDC license. However, Applicants who do not hold a current CSUDC license in Utah must submit a copy of their score report showing a passing score on the national exams listed above.
Certified Advanced Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (CASUDC)
CASUDC applicants must pass one of the following exams:
- NCC AP Exam Level II administered by NAADAC;
- NCC AP Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) Exam administered by NAADAC; or
- Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (AADC) Exam administered by IC&RC.

Advanced Substance-Use Disorder Counselor (ASUDC)
Applicants who hold a current CASUDC license in Utah are not required to pass any additional exams before they apply for the ASUDC license. However, applicants who do not hold a current ASUDC license in Utah must submit a copy of their score report showing a passing score on one of the national exams listed under CASUDC.
